Hardwood furniture is built to last – and when properly cared for, it only becomes more beautiful with age. Whether you’ve chosen a live edge dining table, a handcrafted bench, or a unique chopping board from Sand & Grain Furniture, a little regular maintenance goes a long way in preserving its natural charm. Here’s our simple guide to keeping your hardwood furniture looking its best for years to come.
1. Daily Cleaning: Keep It Simple
For everyday cleaning, less is more. Use a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth to wipe away dust and spills. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, sprays, or polishes that can strip the wood’s finish. A gentle mix of warm water and a small amount of mild soap is more than enough for a quick wipe-down.
Top tip: Always wipe in the direction of the grain to avoid leaving streaks or marks.
2. Protect from Heat, Moisture & Direct Sunlight
Wood is a natural material, and it responds to its environment. To prevent warping, splitting or discolouration, keep your furniture away from direct heat sources (like radiators or fireplaces) and avoid placing it in strong, prolonged sunlight. Always use coasters, placemats, and trivets to protect from hot dishes or liquids.
Bonus tip: If you’re placing a table near a window, consider blinds or sheer curtains to diffuse sunlight and reduce fading.
3. Regular Oiling: Feed the Wood
Most of our furniture is finished with hardwax oil or natural oils that enhance the grain and protect the surface. Over time, these finishes can wear, especially on high-use items like dining tables or chopping boards. Re-oiling your furniture every 6–12 months helps maintain its appearance and adds a fresh layer of protection.
- Use a natural finishing oil (like XXXXX oil – we’re happy to recommend the right one).
- Apply with a cloth and rub evenly into the wood.
- Allow to absorb and buff away excess after 10–15 minutes.
- Let the piece dry fully before use.
4. Dealing with Scratches & Marks
Minor scuffs and scratches are part of the story of handmade furniture – but if you want to reduce their appearance, you can gently sand the area with a fine sand paper (always with the grain), then reapply oil to blend. For deeper dents or stains, get in touch and we’ll be happy to advise on the best approach.
5. Caring for Live Edge Pieces
Live edge furniture can have more natural variation than regular planked wood – knots, undulations, bark remnants and texture. These features are part of what makes each piece special. Use a soft brush to remove dust from textured areas and oil more regularly to keep those edges looking rich and nourished.
Long-Lasting Beauty, Naturally
With a little care and attention, your Sand & Grain furniture will age gracefully and become a cherished part of your home. If you’re ever unsure how to treat a particular piece or want advice on refinishing, don’t hesitate to get in touch – we’re always happy to help.
